What do exercise, friendships and equanimity have to do with healthy skin? On the HEALTHWISE podcast, Prof. Dr. Steinkraus explains why ageing well involves far more than skincare.
We cannot prevent ageing. But we can influence how we age. During a live recording of HEALTHWISE on Sylt, Prof. Dr. Steinkraus spoke with Nils Behrens about the ten maxims from his book How to Look Better – and a fundamental distinction: lifespan and healthspan are not the same thing. Ideally, they should be equally long. The goal is not to look fifty at eighty, but to remain as healthy and independent at eighty as others are at sixty. The conversation covers sleep, nutrition, exercise, not smoking and a sensible approach to sun exposure, as well as what skincare can actually achieve and which active ingredients have been thoroughly studied. They also discuss friendships across generations, touch and closeness, tolerance and equanimity. The skin cannot be considered in isolation from the person as a whole. Towards the end, Nils Behrens asks which of the ten maxims Prof. Dr. Steinkraus considers the most important. His answer: exercise. Not competitive sport, but regular physical activity, ideally throughout life.
