Prof. Dr. Steinkraus has written a book. About skin, about beauty, about living well – and about the question of how all of this connects.
Anyone who has ordered from us before probably knows the card: the ten maxims, white on green included with every first order for over four years now. Prof. Dr. Steinkraus has now expanded these maxims – across ten chapters that draw on four decades of clinical dermatology, on the development of his own active ingredients and formulations, on thousands of patient conversations, and on the experience of a lifetime. What emerged from all of this resists simple categorisation. 'How to Look Better' is part essay collection, part personal account, part guide, part reflection on life – grounded in expertise, told personally, anecdotal and evidence-based.
The book goes far beyond skincare. At its core is a simple but consequential question: how can lifespan and healthspan remain as closely aligned as possible – how do we live not just long, but healthy until the very end? Longevity is a word that stands for many things today. Prof. Dr. Steinkraus is less interested in the term than in what lies behind it – and he contextualises it, draws cross-references, makes connections, and arrives at conclusions that occasionally surprise, but always provide orientation. Humorous, where it fits. Accessible, where it counts.
Surface and substance cannot be separated from one another – that is the foundational idea of this book. And it explains why sleep, nutrition, and evidence-based skincare share space with friendships, touch, and inner coherence, each given its own chapter. Tolerance is treated here as a health factor. Chronic outrage as a measurable driver of ageing.
In this book, beauty does not arise through correction, but through coherence.
One of the most extensive chapters is devoted to the sun – a topic on which expert dermatological opinion is anything but uniform. Prof. Dr. Steinkraus takes a nuanced position that distinguishes itself equally from the widespread panic and from the even more widespread carelessness. He lays out the current state of research, explains the difference between UVA and UVB radiation, assesses sun protection filters, and arrives at a conclusion that may surprise some: for the healthy person, the sun is fundamentally to be regarded as a positive. But it requires knowledge and good judgement.
