Moors are the largest carbon storage on land – an invaluable treasure for the global climate. And yet around 90% of these ecosystems are damaged or threatened with extinction. Hardly anyone knows this. At the same time, moorland landscapes possess a quiet, fascinating beauty.
That is why we are committed to protecting them. For every product sold from the Prof. Dr. Steinkraus series, €1 goes to the Verein Naturschutzpark Lüneburger Heide (VNP) foundation. This allows 1 m² of moorland to be renaturalised. Our common goal: to revive 300 hectares of moorland – equivalent to 3 million square metres – in the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve.
This means that every purchase makes a small but concrete contribution to the protection of this unique natural area.
We are dedicated to the natural beauty of your skin – and draw on the powers of nature to achieve this. Many of the active ingredients that characterise our concept are inspired by their ingenious interaction. At the same time, we know how strongly environmental factors influence skin health.
That is why our commitment to an intact environment is not only a matter of course, but part of our identity. Our sustainability goals are correspondingly high: we are constantly searching for better technologies, materials and ideas – to produce even more cleanly, package more intelligently and save resources in a targeted manner.
The Pietzmoor near Schneverdingen on the south-western edge of the Lüneburg Heath is located just a few minutes west of the A7 motorway between Hamburg and Hanover. Here, the impressive world of a raised bog opens up – a unique biotope that we are committed to preserving and regenerating. It combines fascinating beauty with ecological significance: countless plant and animal species find their habitat here, while at the same time making a valuable contribution to climate protection by binding carbon.
For us, sustainability means consistently taking many small steps. In order to work as environmentally friendly as possible, we review all processes and product cycles rigorously and transparently. As a small company, we know that every contribution counts and every new idea is valuable.
One example is our choice of materials: our shipping boxes are made of grass paper – a renewable resource that we use with conviction. We use FSC-certified paper for folding boxes and package inserts, our glass, plastic and paper packaging materials can be disposed of separately, and our tubes are designed to be easily recyclable.
We take on this responsibility not only out of duty, but above all out of conviction – because these issues are close to our hearts.
Moors cover only about 3% of the Earth's surface – yet they store around 30% of terrestrial carbon. This corresponds to about 75% of the total carbon in the atmosphere and is twice as much as in the entire above-ground forest biomass on Earth.
One example illustrates the scale of this: 1 hectare of intact bog binds around 9 tonnes of CO₂ annually – roughly twice as much as an average hectare of forest. The importance of bogs for both the regional and global climate can therefore hardly be overestimated.
At the same time, moors are under massive threat worldwide. Many areas are damaged or have already dried up – with serious consequences. This is because a degraded moor not only loses its storage function, but also becomes the opposite: it itself becomes a source of CO₂.
